Browse iTune specific genres

There are all kinds of media types to browse within iTunes. You can access music, television shows and films to download directly to your iPad. These are further broken down into genres, a list of which can be accessed by tapping the More tab at the top of the iTunes interface. The list is context sensitive, and it will show the relevant genre types depending on which part of the iTunes store you are currently browsing.

Genres isn’t the only searching gig in town, however. You can also browse by Featured music and the Charts, so you can easily find that current track you keep hearing on the radio that you can’t get out of your head. Browsing via categories often reveals hidden gems you might otherwise have missed.

With so many titles available within iTunes, you need a little insight into any future purchases. This is possible thanks to the preview function that is built into the iTunes app. This means that before you spend your money on an item you can try a sample of it first. This applies to all media types and not just music. Previews for music tracks and ringtones are activated by tapping the song title.

You can tap it again to stop the preview. On average most previews last approximately a minute. When it comes to Movies, the iTunes app features trailers that can be streamed. These are found in the dedicated page.

Re-install your previous purchases

You may find that over time you will need to delete and then re-install certain apps. The App Store keeps track of previous downloads and purchases and keeps them within their own section of the App Store.

This is accessed via the Purchased tab at the bottom of the App Store interface. This will then show two tabs, one with a list of every previously downloaded app and another listing only the apps that are not currently installed. There is also a search bar to help you track down specific apps.

An uninstalled app is indicated by a cloud icon. Tap it to re-install a required app. You need never lose your money again; if you want the app back on your new device, you can get it from the cloud rather than having to pay for it again.

Buying apps and password protection

Purchasing an app is as easy as tapping a button. When you see an app that you wish to purchase, just tap on the price and the button will change to a Buy prompt. Tap it again to confirm your purchase; your app will now start to download.

Depending on your settings you may need to enter your iTunes account password in order to initiate the purchase. When your password has been entered correctly you can make other purchases within 15 minutes without needing it again. If you’d rather be asked for the password every time (ie regardless of the time elapsed since it was last requested), then open the Settings app and select General.

Select the Restrictions option from within this menu and tap the Require Password option. Here you can switch between 15 minutes or Immediately. Switching to Immediately lowers the risk of others buying apps on your device without your permission.

When the Buy button appears, you’re ready to purchase.

Auto downloads on iPad

You can instruct your iPad to download updates to apps automatically. You can also set your iPad to automatically download any purchases made on other iOS devices (other devices must also use the same iTunes account). This saves you from having to manually go through the App Store and tapping the cloud to get your content.

Open the Settings menu and then select the iTunes & App Store option. Go down to the Automatic Downloads section and use the toggle switches to choose your preferences.

You can set individual switches relating to Music, Apps, Books and Updates, so you don’t have to set everything to ‘On’ if you only want, for example, Apps and Music to download.

Enable Near Me / Find popular local apps

Near Me is a way of finding out what apps are being used by other people in your area. It’s useful for finding apps that may be tailored towards local services such as travel and tourism.

To activate it, open the Settings app and select Privacy. Tap Location Services and toggle the App Store option to On. Open the App Store and select the Near Me tab to load a list of apps that are popular with other users in your area.

You can read people’s reviews of these apps before you download them – just because they’re being used doesn’t always make them the best!

Add your own app review

Are you the sort of person who always has something to say? Or do you simply like to give feedback? If the answer to either of these is yes, then you’re in luck. The App Store allows you to leave behind a review of any app products you have used on your iPad.

Once you have downloaded and tried out an app you can then leave a review for it in the App Store. This is done by visiting the page for the relevant app and tapping the Reviews tab. Scroll down until you see the Write a Review option. Select this and then type in your review. You can also add a rating of up to five stars.

Once you’re done, tap the Send button to submit your words of wisdom. Whether the app in question is free or not, you can still leave a review. Your opinion could help other users to decide on an app to download.

Search the App Store

Find, Search Apps from App Store

There are so many different categories and applications within the App Store that it is hard to know where to start when it comes to looking for what you want. But Apple has made this process very easy because there are a number of ways to search the App Store. The most obvious one to start with is the Search field in the top-right corner of the screen. Tap on this and start typing a search term.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something less specific than a certain app, you can tap on the More option from the tabs at the top of the screen to view a list of app types. Then there is also the Top Charts section that lists the most popular apps.
